Face Recognition Technology for Entrance Control Essay

Facial acknowledgment innovation alludes to a PC driven application that consequently distinguishes a person from their advanced picture by a correlation of specific facial highlights in a facial database and in a live picture (Vacca, 2007, p. 95).â The innovation makes a format of people’s facial arrangements, for example, the lengths of their noses and the edges of their jaws.â It in this manner capacities like other biometric advances (for example iris filtering) that utilization organic highlights for the reasons for acknowledgment. As per Visionics, a producer of face acknowledgment innovation, the innovation is equipped for discovering human appearances â€Å"anywhere in the field of view and at any separation, and it can ceaselessly follow them and harvest them out of the scene, coordinating the face against a watch list† (Kautzer, 2002).â What is progressively, facial acknowledgment innovation is these days utilized for entrance management.â Systems are being intended to consequently open ways to just those people whose facial highlights are conspicuous on the grounds that they have been taken care of into those frameworks (â€Å"Face Recognition Entrance Control System,† 2009). Yet, is there more to confront acknowledgment innovation than meets the eye?â as it were, is it sensible to depend on the viability of face acknowledgment innovation for entrance control? Depiction and Uses of Facial Recognition Technology It is normal mind innovation that permits people to perceive individual human beings.â According to Bruce and Young (1986), there are â€Å"face acknowledgment units† in the cerebrums of people (p. 361).â Face acknowledgment includes coordinating â€Å"the results of basic encoding,† that is, facial highlights that are spotted by the eye with â€Å"previously put away auxiliary codes† (Bruce and Young, p. 361). Vacca composes that there are three regions of the face that are â€Å"primary targets† in face acknowledgment since they don't normally change (p. 95).â These pieces of the face incorporate upper areas of a person’s eye attachments, the piece of the face encompassing one’s cheekbones, and the sides of the human mouth. Whether or not the human mind additionally considers these pieces of the face generally critical to facial acknowledgment, Vacca clarifies three distinct methods utilized in man-made face acknowledgment innovation, to be specific, eigenface frameworks, eigenfeature frameworks, and warm imaging.â Eigenface picture frameworks catch facial pictures and change them to â€Å"light and dull areas† (Vacca, p. 95).â In eigenfeature frameworks, certain highlights of the face, for instance, the eyes and the mouth, are chosen and separations are estimated between these features.â Thermal imaging frameworks, then again, take warm pictures of the human face, concentrating on the example of veins (Vacca). Despite the fact that iris examining and different sorts of biometric innovations are known to be definitely more exact than face acknowledgment innovation, it is accepted that the last would be all the more generally acknowledged in light of the fact that it is least intrusive.â This innovation doesn't expect clients to push, snap, or supplement anything into the framework, notwithstanding the way that it takes numerous specialists to make eigenface, eigenfeature or warm imaging frameworks. Also, associations utilizing the face acknowledgment innovation don't require the establishment of anything aside from another product application.â The cameras as of now set up just as pictures of people on record are sufficient for associations that utilization this innovation. Thus, face acknowledgment innovation is less expensive than iris filtering, for example, which requires understanding arrangements (Rutherford, 2001).â According to Frances Zelazney, who fills in as the chief of corporate correspondence at Visionics †a main engineer of biometrics †one more preferred position of facial acknowledgment innovation when contrasted with other biometric advances is that â€Å"facial acknowledgment accommodates characteristic human reinforcement since we normally remember one another†¦Ã¢ If the framework goes down, somebody can pull out an ID with an image as reinforcement, something you can’t do with unique finger impression devices† (Rutherford). Obviously, facial acknowledgment innovation is known as the quickest developing biometric innovation in our day.â Law implementation organizations and the military have been effectively utilizing the innovation for a long time without people in general monitoring it.â In the year 1988, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Lakewood Division, started utilizing composite portrayals of suspects, just as video pictures, so as to direct ventures on a database of advanced facial shots. The division likewise has a photograph database of sex wrongdoers and plans to discover suspects on this database.â Then there is the Gang Reporting Evaluation Tracking framework that can be looked with the utilization of photographs of suspects all together for law implementation to dodge bogus distinguishing proof cards just as data that has been introduced by posse individuals (Jarvis). Different utilizations of face acknowledgment innovation in the zone of criminal examination incorporate the Integrated Law Enforcement Face-Identification System which fuses a novel three dimensional composite innovation to recognize calculated view face shots more easily.â The framework is intended to be useful in the right ID of uncooperative suspects notwithstanding subjects that have been gotten from a separation utilizing video observation cameras. England is known to use at any rate 200,000 camcorders for surveillance.â Many of these cameras are being introduced with the facial acknowledgment innovation today.â Typically these frameworks use PCs to screen cameras that are searching for perceived criminals.â As soon as the framework apparently identifies a known lawbreaker, the police are called (Jarvis). There are various United States international safe havens around the globe that are utilizing the face acknowledgment innovation to shield crooks from entering the country.â The Israel-Palestine outskirt control is also utilizing the innovation to lessen wrongdoing (Jarvis).â IQ Biometrix, set up in 2001, was an organization giving assistance to a large number of law requirement offices around the globe with the FACES â„ ¢, a pivotal programming device permitting clients to make and reproduce billions of face shots, just as encode, index and transmit them. The innovation consolidated a facial composite instrument that the FBI and the CIA additionally used.â The United States Department of Defense, the U.S. Naval force, and different neighborhood just as state police organizations had also picked this earth shattering arrangement of facial acknowledgment (â€Å"IQ Biometrix†). Given the significance of placing a name to a face in law implementation, regardless of whether it is to understand wrongdoings, secure the general population, or to guarantee security in prisons, face acknowledgment innovation is demonstrating itself to be of gigantic value.â Sheriff Everett Rice with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in Florida utilizes the Viisage face acknowledgment innovation to â€Å"positively recognize and confirm individuals† (â€Å"Facial Recognition in Action,† 2007).â Some of these people have been as of late captured while others are going to be released.â So far, utilization of the innovation has been effective, and clients of the innovation accept that it would greaterly affect wrongdoing control in the years to come (â€Å"Facial Recognition in Action†).â coming up next is a nitty gritty record of the case being thought of:  Application of face acknowledgment innovation by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is a model for different organizations associated with criminal investigation.â The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has applied the new innovation in different manners as well.â for instance, the Sheriff’s Office has extended utilization of the innovation to its watch vehicles to permit road delegates to recognize those people that have been halted and can't create ID. There are workstations in the Pinellas Country where examiners may utilize face acknowledgment innovation to think about pictures that have been gained in investigations.â This framework takes into consideration search of in any event 2,000,000 pictures inside ten seconds.â What is more, this program based framework is accessible in the vehicles of representatives that watch the lanes of the Pinellas County (â€Å"Facial Recognition in Action†).â Report on the utilization of face acknowledgment innovation for law requirement in the Pinellas County proceeds with along these lines

Essay on The Lego Group Case - 3410 Words

Introduction Founded in 1932, the LEGO Group is a privately held company headquartered in Billund, Denmark. The vision of Lego Group is to â€Å"inspire children to explore and challenge their own creative potential†[1] Lego now ranks 4th in the world as a toy manufacturer. The Lego Group employs nearly 9,000 workers and its own product, Lego Brick can be found in over 130 countries. The financial performance of Lego declined drastically through the 1990’s and early 2000’s. In 2004, the company accumulated losses of DKK1.9 billion.[2] Therefore, Lego tried to implement some changes in order to cut the production cost and reverse the poor situation. It wasn’t until 2004 when LEGO faced the largest deficit yet that an outsider was appointed as the CEO. Jorgen Vig Knudstorn suggested to drop the arrogance and listen to the customers. He attempted to fix the ineffective and inflexible supply chain traditionally used by LEGO. Knudstrom was more willing to try something new and adopt and establish a new value for the group. LEGO’s Competitor’s LEGO maintains the leading position on the market for construction toys in the world. United States is the largest market for the products while Mega Bloks is the second player[1]. LEGO has an advantage over new competitors considering the costs required for advertising and the costs for promoting a name in the market that can reach the LEGO brand recognition. As of 2004 the LEGO Group was the fourth-largest toy manufacturer in the world. A few years ago, the LEGO Brick was acclaimed â€Å"Toy of the Century† by Fortune Magazine and the British Association of Toy Retailers[2]. In fact, the arrival of competitors in the market for construction toys has done little to damage the sales of the LEGO Group. Dostoevsky and Maslow Needs in Life, How They Are Prioritized, and the Exceptions Free Essays

Dostoevsky has written, â€Å"Without a clear perception of his reasons for living, man will never consent to live, and will rather destroy himself than tarry on earth, though he be surrounded with bread.† (The Grand Inquisitor) With indirect opposition, Maslow’s idea on these needs is stated in his quote, â€Å"A person lacking food, love, and self-esteem, would most likely hunger for food more strongly than anything else.† A number of instances stand as evidence to both Maslow and Dostoevsky’s statements. We will write a custom essay sample on Dostoevsky and Maslow: Needs in Life, How They Are Prioritized, and the Exceptions or any similar topic only for you Order Now First let us look at the claim Fyodor Dostoevsky has made. The Bible also has three references for a very similar idea. Scripture has expressed, in Deuteronomy 8:3, Matthew 4:4, and Luke 4:4, that ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ (The Bible) All individuals have accepted the Bible as truth would feel this way and therefore approach life’s needs as Dostoevsky. The act of fasting is also an example of how Fyodor’s statement might come into play during an individual’s life. Another group of individuals who might be observed to follow the Dostoevsky idea would be those who are suffering from serious mental disorders. A loss of regular and proper diet is a symptom of severe cases of depression, anxiety, and stress. (MayoClinic) They become so focused on their struggle to overcome these feelings, of being lost, or alone, or unorganized, and unsafe, that the priority of food becomes pushed aside. But in Maslow’s Pyramid the feelings of safety and organization, love and belonging, are all placed higher, or less important, than the need to satisfy hunger. (Myers) Order of prioritization is the foundation of contradiction between the two statements. Abraham Maslow’s idea seems to be more realistic to a majority of the remaining population. How is it reasonable to think a person would have the capability to even find their identity or â€Å"the purpose in life† without the energy supplied by fulfilling basic needs, like eating? This was a common reaction I heard from peers and adults after telling of Dostoevsky’s statement. Gandhi said, â€Å"Even God cannot talk to a starving man except in terms of bread.† (Aldrich) Some needs take priority over others. (Myers) Our brain causes us to have feelings of motivation for needs; the most concrete are physiological needs, like our drive to eat. It would be unhealthy and tiring to suppress and ignore your bodies drive to eat while you find your identity. In extreme measures you could even die doing this. As we can see, neither Maslow nor Dostoevsky’s claims can be applied to human beings as an entirety, as there are exceptions. The differences and personal circumstances attached to individuals are all too different. Even Abraham Maslow himself recognized that not all personalities followed his proposed hierarchy of needs. (Huitt) We have discovered though, that both of our statements tend to be more applicable to one group over the other. Religious individuals would be highly likely to side with Dostoevsky’s views, where as people who do not value an identity outside their own would agree with Maslow’s prioritization of needs. To build off of Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, it has been proposed, (Norwood) a joint effort of trying to satisfy a single level of a need is also learning how to continue to satisfy this need. During this process an individual is forming part of their identity by developing and adopting a personalized method of reaching a need. For example, people at the esteem level seek out empowering information, and those at the safety level would need helping information. If Norwood’s more currently proposed statement, that finding identity and satisfying needs are interrelated, is correct, then Maslow and Dostoevsky would both hart part in creating one universal statement. As for now, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Abraham Maslow’s statements of needs in life and how they are prioritized stand separately. Across humanity, some people accept one over the other as true. In my research for the paper, I have been able to loosely affiliate certain groups of people with Maslow or Dostoevsky’s claims. A number of instances stand as evidence to both statements. Each idea is held accountable in the correct situations. It is not a surprise to me how the controversy of deciding on a dominant idea has not been settled. Parental Influence on Love Life Professor Ramos Blog

Parental Influence on Love Life Growing up you are told if a child acts good or bad it’s because of their parents, and they are reflecting them. If that is so, does your children really reflect your relationship mistakes or action when they start dating out in the world? According to Karen Stephens from Parenting Exchange, â€Å"Children, in general, do tend to grow up to be a lot like their parents. Social scientists and genetic researchers have identified many cycles that loop from one generation to the next† (Stephens). In the story Never Date a Mexican by Sandra Cisnoros this is to be true. In Never Marry a Mexican the main character Clemencia talks about her mother and farther who got married in America. Her mother and farther are the average loving couple which started with a romantic encounter involving a dance. You could say that her farther swooped her mother off from her feet, â€Å"†¦ She turned around to the voice that was asking her to dance. A big show-off, she’d say years l ater† (Cisneros 71). One day Clemencia’s farther fell ill and was on his death bed. Was Clemencia’s mom there like a wife should? No, instead she was with another man. This later leads to Clemencia’s actions in her own love life. Clemencia mom states, â€Å"Never Marry a Mexican† (Cisneros 68). Clemencia’s mom first husband was from Mexico and she was from America. Clemencia mother compares her relationship to her first husband to how being married to a Mexican is unhappy. This makes Clemencia also think this way. Not only Mexicans but being married to any man. It said in the Story Never Marry a Mexican, â€Å"So, no. I’ve never married and never will.† (Cisneros 69) When she marries her new husband Clemencia feels like there is no home for her to go back too. Because her mom’s new family has taken over the house. â€Å"When she married that white man† and he and her boys moved into my father’s house, it was if she stopped being my mother† (Cisneros 73). This shows that Clemencia is saying that her affair with Owen separated their family and Clemencia’s mom is no longer her mom. â€Å"Shit! Because she knew as well as I did there was no home to go home to. Not with our Mother† (Cisneros 73). This has a direct effect on how she sees Drew and pursues him just like her mom pursues Owen, and also why she feels that it is okay possible ruin a family because Clemencia believes her mom ruined theirs. Parents are everything to children most of the time and when one of your parents are on their death bed it is a horrible time. What is the job of the other parent? It is believed the role the other parent is to be there for her kids and do all they can to make it better and at least not make it worst. What does the mom do the exact opposite for her family. She goes out and sleeps with another man â€Å"†¦ Owen Lambert, the foreman at the photo-finishing plan, who she was seeing even while my father was sick† (Cisneros 73). While her family is spending their last time with the farther before he passes away. This is similar to what Clemencia does with Drew on the night that his son is being born. â€Å" †¦ while his mother lay on her back laboring his birth, I lay with in his mother’s bed making love to you† (Cisneros 75). Clemencia and her mom are both involved into cheating, the one being cheated on both happen to be in the hospital during the act, and the one committing the act should be there for the wife or husband not doing what they are doing. Some might say this is a coincidence. I believe it is not for the reason that Clemencia sees her mom do it so why would it not be okay for her to do it also? Clemencia sates that she is a romantic but not at the same time in the text, â€Å"†¦I’m too romantic for marriage. Marriage has failed me you could say† (Cisneros 69). Her mom and farther started off happy with the romantic stuff that we all love. Things goes downhill in her parents love life and her mom cheats on her dad. Clemencia’s mom makes a lot of excuses on why she cheated. She says, â€Å"because I married to young, mi’ja.† she say, â€Å"Because your farther, he was so much older than me, and I never had a chance to be young† (Cisneros 73). Clemencia then sees that all good things come to an end and only wants the good stuff, â€Å"Just the cream skimmed off the top. Just the sweetest part of the fruit, without the bitter shin that daily living with a spouse can rend† (Cisneros 69). So that is why Clemencia states that she likes her men barrowed which means that whatever man that she is messing around with belongs to someone else, â€Å"Borrowed. That’s how I’ve had my men†¦.† (Cisneros 69). This is because she learned from her mom because she was with another man why her husband was dying in the hospital and she never has to get hurt like her dad and his family. How hard we try not to we seem to start to copy are parents in some way. If your daily influence was cheating and not happy with their relationship don’t you think that would affect your romantic choices on life. This is what happened to Clemencia, because she learned from her daily influence growing up and then lead to her choices of her love life. You won’t notice the things that you learn from your parents, but at the end of the day we represent them in some way. We can learn and repeat good or bad things from our parents on what to do and not to do. Clemencia took her mom’s cheating on her dad in a negative and positive light. She learned about relationships, to not to get into one because you will get hurt, and cheating or being with someone cheating is okay. That is what life lessons Clemencia took from her mom. Cisneros, Sandra./Woman Hollering Creek and Other stories./New York,Vintage,1991 Stephens, Karen. â€Å"Parents Are Powerful Role Models for Children.† Parenting Exchange, 2007, easternflorida.edu/community-resources/child-development-centers/parent-resource-library/documents/parents-powerful-role-models.pdf.

Stance and Its Relations

Stance and Its Relations â€Å"Stance† and Its Relations â€Å"Stance† and Its Relations By Mark Nichol A previous post listed words such as constitute that ultimately stem from the Latin verb stare, meaning â€Å"stand.† Here, stance (from the present participle of stare), and words in which stance is the root, as well as terms related to those words, are listed and defined. A stance is a literal or figurative attitude or posture or a position in which a person stands to prepare to engage in athletic activity. (Stand is from Old English and is distantly related.) Constance (â€Å"standing with†), meaning â€Å"steadfastness,† is an obsolete term (and a rare female given name), as is its synonym constancy, but the adjectival form constant persists to mean â€Å"steadfast† as well as â€Å"invariable† or â€Å"uniform† as well as â€Å"regular.† The adverbial form is constantly, and the antonym is inconstant. Circumstance (â€Å"standing around†) means â€Å"condition, detail, event, or fact associated with another,† or pertains to evidence that supports the likelihood of an event (as in the phrase â€Å"circumstantial evidence†); circumstances is a euphemism alluding to financial resources (for example, one said to be in straitened circumstances is poor). Distance (â€Å"standing apart†) is the space between two points in space or time, or the quality of being spatially or emotionally remote or intellectually dispassionate; the adjectival form is distant, and distantly is the adverbial form. (Distantness is a rarely used noun referring to the quality of being distant.) One can also describe a far point or area as â€Å"the distance,† as in the phrase â€Å"looking out into the distance.† An instance (â€Å"standing on†) is an example or an occasion; the word can also be a verb meaning â€Å"cite† or â€Å"demonstrate†; in legal terminology, it pertains to the pursuit of a lawsuit. Instant means â€Å"a very small point at time†; an additional, outdated sense is â€Å"the current month,† seen abbreviated in historical correspondence in phrases such as â€Å"in your letter of the 15th inst.,† meaning â€Å"the letter you sent on the 15th of this month.† As an adjective, instant means â€Å"current,† â€Å"immediate,† or â€Å"urgent† or refers to something ready-made or able to be prepared very quickly and/or very easily; instantly is the adverbial form. The adjective instantaneous means â€Å"occurring immediately,† and its adverbial form is instantaneously. The verb instantiate is a synonym for â€Å"embody† or â€Å"express.† A substance (â€Å"standing under†) is any physical material, but substance also pertains to essence, meaning, and quality. Euphemistically, it refers to property or wealth, as in the phrase â€Å"a man of substance.† In reference to addictive or otherwise harmful substances, it is used in the phrases â€Å"controlled substance† and â€Å"substance abuse.† The adjective substantial has multiple senses, including â€Å"essential† or â€Å"true,† or â€Å"considerable† or â€Å"sturdy.† Substantial can also be a noun meaning â€Å"something of substance,† and the quality of being substantial is substantiality or substantialness, and the adverbial form is substantially. Assistance is the act of assisting, or helping, a person or another entity. (Assist literally means â€Å"stand by.†) Desistance refers to desisting, or ceasing to assist; the noun is little used, but desist (â€Å"stop standing†), though rarely employed otherwise, is widely known from the legal phrase â€Å"cease and desist,† which pertains to a demand to stop infringing on a right, such as copyright. Resistance is the act of opposing or an opposing force or a source of opposition, the capacity to resist (â€Å"stand again†), or a behavior in which a patient opposes psychological therapy; capitalized, the noun has referred to various organizations that covertly oppose a force occupying a country or other geopolitical territory. Administration and Management of U.S. Prsions Research Paper

Administration and Management of U.S. Prsions - Research Paper Example In our world today, there are several forms of punishment being implemented in countries all over the world, including America. According to Mary Bosworth: â€Å"At the end of 2008, the U.S. was incarcerating more than 2.4 million men, women, and children in 5,000 or so custodial institutions scattered around the country. Over one and a half million (1,595,034) of these people were held under the jurisdiction of state and federal authorities serving sentences of greater than 12 months, leaving around 800,000 individuals housed in local jails, either awaiting trial, pending sentencing, or serving short-term periods of confinement of less than 12 months. Still others were incarcerated by military services or under military supervision† (Bosworth, 2010, p. 2). It can be concluded that prisons and jails play a big role in punishment while confinement is the most serious sanction being used by the courts in the U.S. Imprisonment or prison system, as a form of punishment has evolved in the U.S. and has also been adopted by other countries throughout the world. It has been regarded as a deterrent and preventive measure to lessen the crime rate. The purpose of the penalty is for the reformation of the felon. Since the U.S. does not practice death penalty or capital punishment, it is believed that convicted felons need rehabilitation, as they are subdued by a strange phenomenon which compels them to do wrong to others. Overview â€Å"It is a fact that the United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population, but has amassed almost a quarter of the world's prisoners. The U.S. leads the world in producing prisoners, a reflection of a relatively recent and now entirely distinctive American approach to crime and punishment. The Americans are imprisoned for crimes which include writing bad checks to the use of prohibited drugs and would rarely produce prison sentences in other countries. These convicts are serving longer prison sentences compared to other prisoners from other countries around the world† (New York Times, 2008). â€Å"The United States, which has the most prisoners of any country in the world, last year recorded a largest increase in the number of people in prisons and jails since 2000, the Justice Department reported in June 2007† (Reuters 2007). Due to the fact that the number of prisoners has risen of the recent years, there has been an increase in the problems encountered by the federal government. The rise in numbers has become alarming and must be closely monitored as more criminals have emerged in the recent times. And the administration and management of the U.S. prisons have now been put into issue for criticisms on the effectiveness and financial drain it can bring to the taxpayers’ money. The result of the increase has caused economic meltdown as â€Å"Billions of public safety dollars are absorbed by prison expansion and limits the nation's ability to focus on more effective strategies to promote public safety† (Reuters). â€Å"In the current economic climate, the problem will only worsen as the federal system and many states struggle to deal with high levels of overcrowding. Even the most conscientious wardens must find it difficult to offer meaningful time out of cell, counseling, treatment, adequate care or job training† (Bosworth, 2007). According to Criminal justice experts, â€Å"the increase of the U.S. prison population is attributed the record to tough sentencing laws, record numbers of drug offenders and high crimes rates. State or federal prisons held two-thirds of the nation's incarcerated population while local jails held the rest,

Alignment of IT Strategy CP Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Alignment of IT Strategy CP - Essay Example This paper will candidly and comprehensively explicate why an IT strategy focused on maintaining a cutting-edge technology position is the most effective way to support any kind of overall business strategy. Firstly, from a vaguest and broadest perspective, cutting-edge technology can be described as technological techniques and/or devices that are at the frontier of knowledge, but have been used for a relatively long time jettisoning the unreliability threats to users. Apparently, with cutting-edge technology, a business stays informed on the feasibility of their objects and the possibility of its strategy succeeding. Hence, an IT strategy focused on maintain cutting-edge technology enables the business to triumph by guaranteeing that decisions will be made based on latest available information (Keyes, 2005). Any incongruity of information or rather information asymmetry that would have torpedoed the business’s plan can be thwarted through implementation of IT strategies pinpointed on cutting-edge technology. Additionally, in the past, organizations were unable to bridge the fissure between business and IT professionals due to the perceived dissimilarities in culture, objectives, mutual ignorance and incentives. Consequently, the IT systems proved to be expensive and unable to deliver sufficient returns on investment. However, an IT strategy centered on cutting-edge technology position helps the present organizations to maximize value on investments by openly defining who is responsible for the attainment of certain goals and objectives and unequivocally specifies the indispensable resources (Keyes, 2005). Moreover, the misunderstanding often associated with incorporation of technology into the management of a business is eliminated and replaced with a mutual understanding of how the business’s strategies or objectives will be attained. Argumentative Essay About College :: Education College

Dear Ben,Hey Ben! I was talking with Sean yesterday when he told me the news, you're planning to delay college. This came as a shock to me when I heard it. By not attending college, you may get a year's rest and a chance to think your decisions through, but if you ever do decide to attend college, you will miss out on a lot of opportunities as well. I think you should consider going to college rather than driving the open road after High School. The information you've learned in High School will be more fresh in your mind now than 1 year from now. You have passed 12 years of schooling, yet now you believe it is time to rest and see other places and people for a year or more before attempting college. College adds 4 more years of intense work, yet knowledge learned within High School can make learning new material easier for you. Other people often find themselves getting sidetracked once they put off the option to attend college, that can only hinder your ability to eventually become a college graduate.College can be a fun experience if shared with friends and people of similar age. By waiting an extra year or two, you will find it more uncomfortable within your classes. The entire college experience involves parties, football games, and drinking beer with your buddies as well as an education. As you get into the entire experience and enjoy college, you will understand and appreciate what a college offers. The ideal time for college is now more than ever as you also have scholarships and your parents to help with the expensive money arrangement which is needed. Parents can be a great help in paying for your college, and may be willing to pay much more immediately after graduation from High School, than paying 2 years afterwards. Scholarships are always helpful to students, paying for a little bit of an expensive college. Argumentative Essay About College :: Education College Dear Ben,Hey Ben! Chapter 12 QFR Fundamental of Management Essay

1. Describe the difference between communication and effective communication. How can a sender verify that a communication was effective? How can a receiver verify that a communication was effective? Communication is the process of transmitting information from one person to another. Effective communication is the process of sending a message in such a way that the message received is a close meaning as possible to the message intended. To encode and transmitted through appropriate channel. After messages are received it is decoded back into a form that is meaningful for the receiver. 2. What are the similarities and differences of oral and written communication? What kinds of situations call for the use of oral methods? What situations call for written communication? Oral communication is face to face conversation group discussions, telephone calls, and other circumstances in which the spoken word is used to transmit meaning. Written communication is memos, letters, reports, notes and other circumstances in which the written word is used to transmit meaning. Oral communication or email may be preferred when a message is personal, nonroutine, and brief. Written is best used when it is impersonal, routine and longer. 5. Describe the individual and organizational barriers to effective communication. For each barrier, describe one action that a manager could take to reduce the problems caused by that barrier. Individual barriers are conflicting or inconsistent signals, credibility about the subject, reluctance to communicate, poor listening skills, and predispositions about the subjects. Organization barriers are semantics, status or power differences, different perceptions, and noise, overload and language differences. Overcoming individual skills are develop good listening, encourage two way communication, be aware of language and meaning, maintain credibility, be sensitive to receiver’s and sender’s perspective. Chapter 13 QFR 2. What are the stages of group development? Do all teams develop through all the stages discussed in this chapter? Why or why not? How might the management of a mature team differ from the management of teams that are not yet mature? The stages of group development are (1) forming—bringing members together and getting them acquainted; (2) storming—developing group  identity, structure and leadership, often through conflicts; (3) norming—accepting and codifying role structures and behavioral norms; and (4) performing—moving beyond group formation to begin accomplishing the group’s purpose. Groups typically move through all the stages in the order given, and groups that try to â€Å"short cut† the group development process will often have unresolved issues that will persistently re-surface. The management of mature teams can focus more on performance than on effective development, which means a focus on tasks, rather than on relationships, structures, and culture. For example, while members of a developing group may want or need to spend time getting to know their fellow members through â€Å"ice-breaker† activities, members of mature groups may resent being forced to spend time on such activities. 4. Identify two examples of informal leaders. Can a person be a formal and an informal leader at the same time? Examples of informal leaders might include such persons as the most experienced secretary in a work group, an intelligent and articulate student who serves as a spokesperson for the class, or a neighbor who organizes social events. Formal leadership is conferred by one’s position within the organization while informal leadership is granted to individuals who are admired and respected by others. Clearly then, one person can be both a formal and an informal leader. An example would be a tenured professor who has a formal leadership role in his or her department or college and who is admired and respected by students and colleagues, serving as an informal role model.

How to Find the Meaning and Origin of Your Surname

With a few exceptions, hereditary surnames—the last names passed down through the male family lines—didnt exist until about 1000 years ago. While it may be hard to believe in todays world of passports and retinal scans, surnames just werent necessary before that. The world  was much less crowded than it is today, and most folks never ventured more than a few miles from their place of birth.  Every man knew his neighbors, so  first, or given names, were the only designations necessary.  Even kings got by with a single name. During the middle ages, as families got bigger and villages got a bit more crowded, individual names became inadequate to distinguish friends and neighbors from one another. One John might be called John son of William to distinguish him from his neighbor, John the smith, or his friend John of the dale. These secondary names, werent quite yet the surnames as we know them today, however, because they werent passed down from father to son. John, son of William, for example, might have a son known as Robert, the fletcher (arrow maker). Last names that were passed down unchanged from one generation to the next first came into use in Europe about 1000 A.D., beginning in southern areas and gradually spreading northward. In many countries, the use of hereditary surnames began with the nobility who often called themselves after their ancestral seats. Many of the gentry, however, did not adopt surnames until the 14th century, and it was not until about 1500 A.D. that most surnames became inherited and no longer transformed with a change in a persons appearance, job, or place of residence. Surnames, for the most part, drew their meanings from the lives of men in the Middle Ages, and their origins can be divided into four main categories: Patronymic Surnames Patronymics—last names derived from a fathers name—were widely used in forming surnames, especially in the Scandinavian countries. Occasionally, the name of the mother contributed the surname, referred to as a matronymic surname. Such names were formed by adding a prefix or suffix denoting either son of or daughter of. English and Scandinavian names ending in son are patronymic surnames, as are many names prefixed with the Gaelic Mac, the Norman Fitz, the Irish O, and the Welsh ap. Examples: The son of John (Johnson), son of Donald (MacDonald), son of Patrick (Fitzpatrick), son of Brien (OBrien), son of Howell (ap Howell). Place Names or Local Names One of the most common ways to differentiate one man from his neighbor was to describe him in terms of his geographic surroundings or location (similar to describing a friend as the one who lives down the street). Such local names denoted some of the earliest instances of surnames in France, and were quickly introduced into England by the Norman nobility who chose names based on the locations of their ancestral estates. If a person or family migrated from one place to another, they were often identified by the place they came from. If they lived near a stream, cliff, forest, hill, or other geographic feature, this might be used to describe them. Some last names can still be traced back to their exact place of origin, such as a particular city or county, while others have origins lost in obscurity (Atwood lived near a wood, but we dont know which one). Compass directions were another common geographic identification in the Middle Ages (Eastman, Westwood). Most geographic-based surname s are easy to spot, though the evolution of language has made others less obvious, i.e. Dunlop (muddy hill). Examples: Brooks lived along a brook; Churchill lived near a church on a hill; Neville came from Neville-Seine-Maritime, France or Neuville (New Town), a common place name in France; Parris came from—you guessed it—Paris, France. Descriptive Names (Nicknames) Another class of surnames, those derived from a physical or other characteristic of the  first bearer, make up an estimated 10% of all surname or family names. These descriptive surnames are thought to have originally evolved as nicknames during the Middle Ages when men created nicknames or pet names for his neighbors and friends based on personality or physical appearance. Thus, Michael the strong became Michael Strong and black-haired Peter became Peter Black. Sources for such nicknames included: an unusual size or shape of the body, bald heads, facial hair, physical deformities, distinctive facial features, skin or hair coloring, and even emotional disposition. Examples: Broadhead, a person with a large head; Baines (bones), a thin man; Goodman, a generous individual; Armstrong, strong in the arm Occupational Names The last class of surnames to develop reflect the occupation or status of the first bearer. These occupational last names, derived from the specialty crafts and trades of the medieval period, are fairly self-explanatory. A Miller was essential for grinding flour from grain, a Wainwright was a wagon builder, and Bishop was in the employ of a Bishop. Different surnames often developed from the same occupation based on the language of the country of origin (Mà ¼ller, for example, is German for Miller). Examples:  Alderman, an official clerk of the court; Taylor, one that makes or repairs garments; Carter, a maker/driver of carts; Outlaw, an outlaw or criminal Despite these basic surname classifications, many last names  or surnames of today seem to defy explanation. The majority of these are probably corruptions of the original surnames—variations that have become disguised almost beyond recognition.  Surname spelling  and pronunciation has evolved over many centuries, often making it hard for current generations to determine the origin and evolution of their surnames. Such  family name derivations, resulting from a variety of factors, tend to confound both genealogists and etymologists. It is fairly common for different branches of the same family to carry different last names, as the majority of English and American surnames have, in their history, appeared in four to more than a dozen variant spellings. Therefore, when researching the origin of your surname, it is important to work your way back through the generations in order to determine the  original family name, as the surname that you carry now may have an entirely different meaning than the surname of your distant ancestor. It is also important to remember that some surnames, though their origins may appear obvious, arent what they seem. Banker, for example, is not an occupational surname, instead meaning dweller on a hillside.
